The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has issued an official response to the letter sent by Denys Yevdokymenko, Chairman of NGO "A-League", dated July 15, 2026
The letter, signed by James Macleod, Director of NOC Relations on behalf of the IOC, provides detailed context regarding the recent provisional lifting of the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), which has been in effect since October 12, 2023.
According to the IOC, the decision made on July 7, 2026, to provisionally lift the suspension was based on a thorough analysis by the IOC’s Legal Affairs Commission, noting that the ROC no longer includes regional sports organizations within the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine as its members—which was the original ground for the suspension.
Key highlights from the IOC's response to NGO "A-League":
- Provisional Nature: The lifting of the suspension is strictly provisional.
- Ongoing Sanctions: The IOC will not organize any events in Russia, nor will it invite Russian government or state officials to any of its events.
- Symbols and Flags: No decision has been made regarding the display of the Russian flag, anthem, colors, or any identifications at the upcoming Olympic Games.
- Olympic Charter Rules: The IOC session has reinforced the Fundamental Principles of Olympism in the Olympic Charter. Athlete selection by NOCs must be based not only on performance but also on their ability to serve as positive role models promoting a peaceful society.
